Graphene

New investment aims to establish the UK as a global graphene research hub.

An anouncement will be made detailing how an additional £50 million will be spent to keep the UK at the forefront of research into graphene.

What is graphene?

Graphene is a material discovered by Professor Sir Andre Geim and Professor Sir Kostya Novoselov of The University of Manchester, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 for demonstrating it’s remarkable properties. Graphene is 200 times stronger than steel yet less than an atom thick. It is the strongest and thinnest material ever measured, and also the world’s most conductive material. It has a wide range of potential uses, including ‘bendable’ touch screen TV’s and devices, and lighter aircraft.
