St Peter's Square

St Peter’s Square will be transformed as part of the Town Hall Complex and Central Library redevelopment.

St Peter’s Square will provide a backdrop to the very best in Manchester civic architecture. It is one of the most significant central Manchester locations and has an important history.

As part of the redevelopment, traffic will be substantially reduced to make the square more pedestrian-friendly. Buses will be re-routed and only Metrolink trams will run through it. As a result the square will become a livelier, more flexible space where people can relax and small scale events can be held. And the redevelopment of other nearby buildings will create cafes and other bustling ground floor activity.

A key part of the new square will be an artist-designed contemporary memorial to the events of August 16th 1819, the Peterloo Massacre, a significant moment in the city’s and the country’s history.

The redesign of this significant public space has been the subject of an international design competition. For the latest news on the redevelopment of St Peters Square, visit the Manchester City Council website.
