CMFT’s Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is one of the largest teaching eye hospitals in Europe and one of only two dedicated eye hospitals in the country. Globally acknowledged as a centre of excellence, it is renowned for pioneering work in all aspects of ophthalmology. The Eye Hospital includes the Emergency Eye Centre, Acute Referral Centre, Ophthalmic Imaging, Ultrasound Unit, Electrodiagnosis, Laser Unit, Optometry, Orthoptics, Manchester Eye Bank, Ocular Prosthetics and the Bionic Eye Implant Trial. The research within the Eye Division is well aligned with the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) themes.
Eye surgeons at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital have suceeded with their revolutionary `‘bionic eye’ trial on three of their patients. Each patient regained some sight as a result of their treatment, with one patient being able to identify letters on a computer monitor and read some short words. The surgery was carried out by a team led by Mr Paulo E Stanga, a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Reader in Ophthalmology at The University of Manchester and Manchester Biomedical Research Centre.
This effort is part of a pioneering international trial of the artificial retina, which is intended to help some blind people regain a degree of vision. The Manchester patients are three of only 32 people worldwide, who under the care of 11 different consultants across the globe, have participated in this trial to date.
