Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre

The Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre’s (MAHSC) purpose is to provide a focus for leadership and coordination in health research and healthcare across The University of Manchester and the six most research-active NHS organisations in Greater Manchester.

The seven founding partners of MAHSC are:

  • Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • The Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust
  • NHS Salford (Salford Primary Care Trust)
  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust
  • University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust
  • The University of Manchester

The founding partners of MAHSC combine excellence in academia, clinical service delivery, research management and education to serve a population that has some of the poorest health in the country (three million in Greater Manchester, 11 million within a 50-mile radius).

Together the MAHSC partners employ 34,750 staff and have an annual turnover of £3.2 billion.

MAHSC was formally established in July 2008 to underpin the development of Greater Manchester as a world leader in health research. A federation, which interconnects Manchesters existing research activity and research partnerships, offers huge potential and opportunities and will generate health benefits, economic development, enterprise, innovation and wealth creation in Greater Manchester and the wider North West.

MAHSC is the first AHSC in the UK to cover the full spectrum of care:

  • acute
  • specialist
  • mental health
  • primary care
  • commissioning
