MMU Birley Fields Campus
A new campus will be created to house the Faculty of Health, Psychology & Social Care and the Institute of Education. It is also estimated that the new campus and its 6,000 staff and students will add £29.2m net annual value to the local economy.
The Birley Fields site will be developed to create a new green campus and will include:
- The Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care relocated from Rusholme
- The Institute of Education relocated from Didsbury
- Student accommodation and student information point
- Shared community facilities
- A major new green square fronting Stretford Road
- Car parking for staff
Birley Fields will be the greenest university campus in the UK, with environmental sustainability integral to all design. Ultimately MMU aim to achieve ‘the three zeros’:
- Zero Carbon using: Solar water heating; Biomass boilers; Photovoltaic electricity generation.
- Zero Water so that no supplies are drawn from the mains system and no waste water discharged into the sewerage network using: Storage of rainwater; Recycling lightly polluted wastewater; Abstracting groundwater.
- Zero Waste using: Waste separation and recycling; Waste storage space provided on site; A responsible purchasing policy to be sure that resources bought do not waste any materials.
The large site allows for significant areas of greening and landscaping and, at its heart, an extensive green space (Hulme Square) linked to surrounding areas of trees and grassland. The development will be supported by a Green Travel Plan focused on reducing car use, maximising public transport access and prioritising pedestrian and cycle usage.
