Faculty of Life Sciences

The Faculty of Life Sciences at The University of Manchester is a world-class environment. It is home to 270 academic staff who advance education and research across the entire spectrum of topics in biological and life sciences.

The Faculty of Life Sciences was founded on 1 October 2004 with the creation of The University of Manchester. The Faculty integrated constituent parts from both the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST, and amalgamated the excellence of research and teaching of those prior components.

In addition to pursuing cutting-edge research the Faculty:

  • transmit its enthusiasm for research to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • is committed to the career development of early stage research staff
  • embrace public engagement and widening participation activities (including Research scientists in schools programme and providing a key part of the Beacons Project for Public Engagement)
  • encourage women throughout their career, with the aim of increasing recruitment, retention and progression. The Faculty have achieved a Silver Athena SWAN award for our work in this area.
