Library Theatre

For 58 years, the Library Theatre Company has made a major contribution to Manchester’s cultural life.

Founded in 1952, the company has produced consistently high quality seasons of drama, musical theatre, plays for families, and comedies. It has both helped to develop, and adapted to, Manchester’s changing theatre landscape.

The company has produced numerous U.K. and European premieres, notably works by Stephen Sondheim, Neil Simon, and Terrence McNally and indeed, it has a strong record of successful productions of great 20th century American drama, in particular plays by Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and David Mamet as well as of the major plays of Bertolt Brecht.

It now produces a mixture of contemporary drama and modern classics, with a popular play for families and children at Christmas. Over the past few years it has either won or been nominated for over 30 awards in the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards.
